Marking the buttonholes:

When it comes to sewing buttonholes, every machine is different! I recommend checking out your machine manual (they're actually really useful! I don't think I opened one until I started teaching and yet they have all of the answers!) Below is a link to a video of my machine and a few pointers on things to look out for.
A few tips when sewing buttonholes:
-
Take the buttonhole foot and adjust to fit your button size. Place the button toward the back.
-
Select the buttonhole setting on your machine, or manually adjust if needed.
-
Pull down the buttonhole lever on the side of the machine (not the needle threader!)
-
Make sure you have fusing/interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.
-
Do a practice buttonhole with the same fabric, fusing and layers. It helps to draw a buttonhole on and check placement when it sews!
-
With a 1 step buttonhole - you need to keep your foot down until the whole cycle has finished. With a mechanical machine, you usually need to manually stop the machine.
-
When cutting open the buttonhole, you can place a pin at the end to stop you from cutting through the stitching. Or use a buttonhole chisel, this has taken all the fear out for me and allows a nice clean cut!
(For mechanical machines the process is similar - but you need to RESET before each buttonhole and manually change the width and length, which you can practice on your test.)
