If you’d like to sign-up to receive a gifted membership from someone in our community find more details here.

You and another member of our community will gain access to:

It is not gifting to a friend. If you would prefer to gift a membership to a friend or family member, select this membership tier and provide us with their name and email address in the notes at checkout. Please be aware that at this stage, gifted memberships are a manual process (we're working on it), which means your friend or loved one will not receive the project instantly.

Please note: you will be charged your first month's subscription fee when you sign-up and receive the current project directly to your inbox. After that, you will be charged on the first of each month and receive your new project on the first of each month.

This Month's Project

Next month, we’re sewing coats! But sewing a coat is a pretty big investment in time, fabric and money, right? We want to make sure you’re fully prepped beforehand, and we’re doing it the best way we know how - with a Sewing Coats Skills Kit.

This month, we’re taking it back a notch or two (sewing pun TOTALLY intended) and focusing on learning the skills needed to sew an unlined coat with confidence.

BUT… we’ve put a slightly different spin on it and turned the samplers into something functional - the Ormond apron. Featuring a range of techniques and skills that you often only see on unlined jackets and coats (think: flat-felled seams, vents, welt pockets and top-stitching), this skill-building project will also help you practise finishing skills and have you itching to dive into April’s Ormond coat project.

Sewing Coats Skills Kit

The Sewing Coats Skills Kit is a resource that can stand on its own. From the tools you need, tips for working with heavyweight fabrics and techniques for getting that professional finish, this resource covers everything you need to know and nothing you don't, and breaks it down into manageable chunks at the same time.

By working through the Skills Kit you will gain confidence preparing and working with heavyweight fabrics, and sewing:

  • Flat felled seams on curved and straight seams
  • Bias binding
  • Welt pocket with French seams
  • Vent openings
  • Handstitching (eg. Slip stitch and hand basting)
  • Block fusing + piece fusing
  • Grading
  • Clipping
  • Understitching
  • Sewing a facing

Ormond apron

Sewing a sampler is a great way to learn a new technique or build confidence before using your ‘good’ fabric. Trying new skills on an apron designed to be worn at home, is far less intimidating than sewing an entire coat, and we hope it will encourage you to focus on improving your skills rather than obsessing over perfection.

But, as you would expect from ITF, Ormond isn’t JUST an apron. We’ve included some fun elements to stretch your sewing muscles and help you prepare for next month’s coat project.

The Ormond apron features welt pockets with French seams for a deliciously clean finish on the inside AND outside. With a centre front opening and vent, it’s perfect for crafts where you need a bit more give or to sit, like ceramics. It also features flat felled curved and straight seams, crossed straps for stability and comfort and a cute asymmetric patch pocket on the front.

A true multi-hyphenate, this apron will protect your me-mades from passata splatters in the kitchen, grass stains in the garden or muddy fingers in the pottery studio, all while teaching you new sewing skills.

Sizing

The Ormond apron is available in 3 sizes, which covers our full size range (A - P). The size chart for the pattern can be found here.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 170cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN / SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length.

Supplies

The Ormond apron is compatible with mid to heavyweight woven fabrics such as: denim, cotton canvas, linen or cotton drill. We recommend thinking about the types of fabric you would use to make an unlined jacket or coat and use something similar for the Ormond apron so it gives you a chance to practice.

Fabric requirements

Sizing information, fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions

  • Coordinating thread
  • 0.3m (0.4yd) lightweight cotton fabric to cut one or both sets of pockets
  • 0.3m (0.4yd) lightweight fusible interfacing. If you would like to experiment with different weights of interfacing, we suggest collecting a range of samples before purchasing the interfacing for your apron/samplers.
  • 3m (3.3yds) x 2.5cm (1in) wide cotton webbing
  • 0.8m (0.9yd) x 32mm (1¼in) single-fold bias tape. If using pre-made binding, this is 25mm (1in)

Pattern includes seam allowance.

Mighty Networks group

Once again, we will be working on everything together in our Mighty Networks group. This means that you will be able to ask questions, share your makes and connect with other makers who are also on a mission to learn new skills and sew clothing in a slow and conscious way.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 2 on the In The Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for advanced beginners and beyond. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will have you feeling very proud of both the inside and outside of your garment.

By working through this Coat Skills Kit and apron pattern, you will gain confidence in: sewing flat-felled seams, bias binding, welt pockets with French seams, vents, hand-stitching, block and piece fusing, grading, clipping and unstitching. You will also develop your finishing skills so that the insides are just as beautiful as the outside.

So Very Worth A Subscription!

Early on I got the feeling that In The Folds was a bit different. They were always generous with sharing their knowledge, quick to fully and helpfully answer questions all the while offering designs that I - as an older sewist - loved! Clean lines, great directions and patterns that appeal to ALL age groups. What’s not to love? !

A subscription to In The Folds is well worth the small cost and I love encouraging a group that is so welcoming and talented! We need more like them. I urge any sewist - from beginner to advanced- to consider at least trying a subscription. You will, no doubt learn something, support a special group, and have access to patterns that suit all shapes, sizes and ages! Perhaps like me, once you try a subscription you will wonder why you waited so long and will continue to look forward to each new edition!

Keep up the great work!

Marie, this review has MADE OUR DAY! Thanks you SO MUCH.

Learning Heaps!!

I am a self taught sewer so finding this resource has been wonderful. I am finally learning to do things properly. So far I have only made the Kealy Tee Shirt but I was very happy with how it turned out. A little glitch here and there but it's all a learning experience. The community is very supportive and I love seeing what others have made.

We are so happy to hear you're finding our resources helpful, Jenni! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.

I love Curated by In the Folds!

What a warm and welcoming community to be part of. The patterns are interesting, the skills building is first rate. Mighty Networks works really well, and is a great place to share what we are learning together. To top it all off, this sewing club is in my own part of the world, so the patterns work for the current season! I love everything about this Curated experience, and recommend it to anyone wishing to grow their sewing skills and their love of sewing.

What a ripper of a review, Sue - thank you so much! We've loved having you in the community and seeing what you're making.

more than I ever imagined

I am so happy to have discovered ITF and joined the subscription. It is so much more than patterns and making clothes; I have learned some valuable industrial techniques, different approaches to sewing the same things and getting inspirations from the ever supportive ITF team and community. Most important, ITF has always encouraged me to take my time and sew at my own pace.

Thanks so much for this review!

Absolutely 5 star subscription!

I have been a subscriber for the past year and purchased the previous subscriptions from the beginning.
I am in awe of the sheer amount of hard work that must go into putting together the wonderfully detailed notes and patterns. I absolutely love the format you use to present your notes. Please don't ever change it! The level of detail is extensive but just right. So beautifully set out.
I really look forward to each month's offering and have never been disappointed. I love your detailed but bite sized approach to learning skills. Honestly, I have learned so much. I'm always so amazed at how much we receive as subscribers for the amount we pay. The most worthwhile subscription ever!

Thank you so much for this review, Kathleen. I have passed it on to our team - it really makes our day to hear that what we are doing makes a difference and is appreciated. Happy sewing!
