Curated by In the Folds - Issue 50

Are you ready to make clothes you will wear, love and cherish?

In the Folds offers a monthly subscription that brings together patterns, techniques and answers your specific questions, all in one place, within the In the Folds community.

Curated by ITF projects will help you learn more skills, instead of just making more clothes.

Sewing a handmade wardrobe you are proud of is about learning the skills and building on them over time. With these resources (and access to our online community group), you will build a resource and pattern library that you can refer to on your handmade journey, empowering you to sew a wardrobe that you love, one piece and one skill at a time. We are excited for you to join us.

More information about Curated by In the Folds can be found here.

Skill Sharer

You love what we do at In the Folds and you would like to share it with another maker.

The Skill Sharer tier enables you to pay for your own subscription to the Skill Builder tier and gift one to another maker who cannot afford the subscription at the moment.

If you’d like to sign-up to receive a gifted membership from someone in our community find more details here.

You and another member of our community will gain access to:

  • New monthly projects: You will receive your first project when you sign up and then on the first of every month, you’ll receive a new project straight to your inbox. This will teach you new skills and build on what we’ve been learning each month.

This tier allows another maker access to the subscription (which we will organise). It is not gifting to a friend. If you would prefer to gift a membership to a friend or family member, select this membership tier and provide us with their name and email address in the notes at checkout. Please be aware that at this stage, gifted memberships are a manual process (we're working on it), which means your friend or loved one will not receive the project instantly.

Please note: you will be charged your first month's subscription fee when you sign-up and receive the current project directly to your inbox. After that, you will be charged on the first of each month and receive your new project on the first of each month.

This Month's Project

This two-part Curated project is all about slowing down and sewing with delicate fabrics.

This month is less about rushing to the finished garment and more about building confidence with pattern hacking and thoughtful preparation. We invite you to slow down, stretch your skills and make something special with fabrics you may have been saving for “someday”. Silk chiffon, cotton voile and semi-sheer linen bring a magical quality to handmade garments, adding movement, softness and lightness, but they also ask for extra care and consideration in the sewing process.

To get started, you’ll receive a detailed guide that focuses on patternmaking and preparation skills to set you up for success with delicate fabrics. You will draft and adapt a pattern to create your own party top before you confidently cut into those precious fabrics. Learning these invaluable pattern making techniques sparks our creativity and empowers us to revisit TNT patterns in our stash.

We’ll be referring to the Cartwright and the Rennie dresses, and guide you step by step to adapt them into a versatile top that feels festive yet timeless, perfect for layering or wearing on its own as a celebration piece. You will receive a FREE pattern of your choice to work from this month.

Next month, we’ll dive into the sewing process itself, guiding you step by step with a comprehensive Skills Kit to help you bring your self-drafted party top to life.

Skills you’ll learn this month

  • How to adapt an existing pattern for lightweight or sheer fabrics

  • How to use an existing pattern to draft a new pattern

  • Introductory tools and techniques for pattern making

  • Pattern tracing and checking for accuracy (truing seams, adjusting darts)

  • Dart manipulation

  • How to transform a dress into a top

  • Altering sleeve fullness through slash-and-spread technique

  • Adjusting seam and hem allowances to suit sheers (narrow hems, French seams)

  • Creating Vilene shields to stabilise delicate areas like necklines

  • Planning and making a toile

Within this resource, we refer to the Cartwright and Rennie dresses as examples for the pattern hacking process. These patterns are not automatically included in this month’s membership. However, to celebrate our 50th issue of Curated, you’ll receive a code to receive one of these dresses—or any other pattern of your choice. Of course, the skills outlined here can also be applied to designs from your own personal pattern collection.

Mighty Networks group

Once again, we will be working on everything together in our Mighty Networks group. This means that you will be able to ask questions, share your makes and connect with other makers who are also on a mission to learn new skills and sew clothing in a slow and conscious way.

Difficulty

This resource has been designed for advanced beginners and beyond.

Although this resource could be applied to a number of patterns, the tutorials are based on the Cartwright dress and the Rennie dress. We recommend using one of these patterns to support you as you learn the skills covered in this issue of Curated, particularly if you’re new to pattern drafting.

I have downloaded several of your patterns but at the moment I have sewn just two of them (a Wrap top and a apir of Wide leg pants). The others are awaiting for the right fabric. But I'm understanding that waiting is part of the process!
I am learnig so much fron your approach to sewing. Not only skills but a way of taking care.

A joy to read your review! Thanks so much Sonia.

Love your"copy my clothes" skill builder. Instructions are crystal clear. Started with a long knit sleeveless dress. Turned out great!
Excited to try a pair of favorite jeans eventually. Sewkitekate

Love this group and more!

The patterns, instructions and monthly interactions with the In The Folds hosts are great and has really helped to improve my skills. The online group is pure joy. Everyone is positive, shares very useful information and other resources beyond In The Fold. I take part every month even I am not working on a project because I love the group. I love the style of ITF clothing and as a beginner, being part of this group has built my wardrobe, sewing tools/skills and pattern library. I love having fabrics I pick and clothes that fit me.

Wow, Kathy! Thank you so much. We're so happy we can help you on your sewing journey!

So much more than a pattern-a-month subscription

The team at ITF are all about skill building so you can apply those skills to any pattern you like in future - beautiful construction techniques, fitting to the wearers body, adjusting or "hacking" a pattern to make it your own. Often the monthly projects are designed in a series - such as, learn options and skills to make a collared shirt, then make a collared shirt, then hack it to make it your own as a dress etc. The Foldies online community is also very supportive and well organised using Mighty Networks. I love it!

Thank you so much for this, Jo! Glad you love our learning approach.

So Very Worth A Subscription!

Early on I got the feeling that In The Folds was a bit different. They were always generous with sharing their knowledge, quick to fully and helpfully answer questions all the while offering designs that I - as an older sewist - loved! Clean lines, great directions and patterns that appeal to ALL age groups. What’s not to love? !

A subscription to In The Folds is well worth the small cost and I love encouraging a group that is so welcoming and talented! We need more like them. I urge any sewist - from beginner to advanced- to consider at least trying a subscription. You will, no doubt learn something, support a special group, and have access to patterns that suit all shapes, sizes and ages! Perhaps like me, once you try a subscription you will wonder why you waited so long and will continue to look forward to each new edition!

Keep up the great work!

Marie, this review has MADE OUR DAY! Thanks you SO MUCH.
