Darlow pants

Regular price $22.00

Garment details

The Darlow pants are a cropped, tapered pant full of interesting panel lines and details. They have been designed to give a new spin to the basic pant and can be worn as an easy and casual option or dressed up for a nice evening option.

The pants sit on the natural waist and feature a fly front with zip closure, shaped waistband, in-seam pockets, back pockets and hem facings. The Darlow pants are designed to be quite fitted through the waist and hip, before more volume is added through the leg, for an interesting shape.

View A has slightly more volume through the leg than View B, and features patch pockets, while View B has back welt pockets. Both comprise a number of interesting shaped panel lines that encourage a unique shape and an interesting experience. Some of the photographs have the panel lines drawn on, so that you can get a better idea of how the panel lines work on the body.

The Darlow pants are beautifully designed and carefully drafted to include many interesting details, to make this a very enjoyable sew for confident sewers. The pattern comes with fully illustrated instructions to hold your hand every step of the way which can be printed at home, or simply viewed on a computer or tablet.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 3 (out of 5) on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, which means you should be confident using sewing patterns and can handle basic pattern alterations to achieve a good fit.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: fitting pants, sewing a fly front, sewing pockets (patch or welt - depending on the style you choose to make), piecing panels together, working with curved seams and attaching a waistband.

Suggested Fabrics

The pattern is compatible with mid to heavy weight woven fabrics.

Consider using: linen, linen blends, cotton drill/twill, denim or wool. For a softer, more dressy silhouette, consider using midweight silk or similar. Keep in mind that View A has more volume in the thigh / knee area and you may want to use mid-weight fabric (rather than heavy weight fabric) for this reason.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions - Both views

  • Coordinating thread
  • 1 x 15cm (6in) trouser zip (use a standard dress zip if you are using lightweight fabric)
  • 1 x 20mm (¾in) button
  • 2 x medium pant hooks (no wider than 12mm / ½in)
  • 0.5m (0.5yds) x Light to mid-weight fusible interfacing (depending on your fabric choice)
  • Optional: For inner waistband - 1m (1.1 yd) x 32mm (1¼ in) single-fold bias tape

I put on weight, now I have to make another pair.

I made these Darlow pants 3 years ago out of Japanese indigo dyed dobby cotton from Potter & Co in Perth. I went for the trickier Style A pants & did all white top stitching on the seams & hand stitching & everything. They took bloody ages & I loved these pants so very much. Last year I put on weight & now they don't fit me anymore...insert sad face emoji here. The fact that these pants that took me so long to make & were so beautiful and I can't wear them anymore has just made me really consider going to the effort all over again in a larger size (less effort than dieting that's for sure). If I do it again I will get the PDF version as I cut the first printed pattern to size...insert another sad face emoji here.
Advice to people...get the PDF version & print only the size you need, that way you'll have the pattern forever.

What an awesome review, Paula! Thanks so much (for the giggles too!).

Big fan of this pattern!

I got this pattern recently through my Curated by ITF subscription (another amazing ITF product:)) and couldn’t be more excited how well these pants fit and look!
I toiled and made a few adjustments following the fit kit that is included with the pattern, Emily’s advice in our Curated by ITF forum, as well as a tutorial on calf adjustment available on ITF database of Q&A about their patterns. The end result were a super comfy and stylish pants that fit me exactly how I like. I made two pairs in view B so far, one in cotton twill and another in lightweight denim. Both are amazing! I plan to make view A in the future.
The pattern itself and the instructions are impeccable and easy to follow.
I highly recommend this to anyone looking to up their sewing game and wanting unique looking and versatile pants.

A jig saw Rubik’s cube of a pattern!

Don’t panic! Despite my title this is an amazing pattern which comes together step by step and is hugely satisfying! This was my first pair of trousers and I decided if I could make the Darlow pants I’d be up for tackling anything!
My top tips:
1.Get the pdf version and print off just the size you need. Saves time rather than trying to trace off the tissue pattern of many sizes!
2.Invest in a good pattern marker. A bold chalk with some staying power or a washable marker. You’re going rely on those notches!
3. Mark the notches both sides of fabric and number each pattern piece both sides too. It’ll really help.
4. Don’t lose heart! It will come together, even the fly front! I had 3 goes at this part as I’d never done a fly front before and ended up studying a pair of my rtw trousers to understand it.
5. Make a muslin/toile!!! Really do this. I used an old duvet cover. So worth it to understand it and get good fit. I made a straight F no adjustments .
Give it a go. No rush.

Hi Jane! Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for our Darlow pants pattern, as well as all the tips you’ve included. We’re so pleased to hear how much you enjoyed making them!

Amazing pattern, my only favorite

I made this pattern for my daughters and for myself. It gives you the opportunity to make adjustments acording to different types of bodyes and the style is so modern and flattering on anybody.
It works extremely well on so many types of fabrics, for my daughters I used cotton twill, view B, and for myself used cotton sateen, view A, linen and light cotton twill from two recycled trousers, view B, and knitted medium/heavy jersey with copper shine(glam!), viewB.View A trousers are amazing for exercising as the extra volume gives you enough room to move in woven fabrics even for the stretchyest yoga/pilates exercise. Overall, the best adaptable pattern, stylish and confortable, easy to understand, plenty clear information on how to adjust. Thank you Emily, I am hooked forever

5 Stars for In the Folds Darlow Pants!

I love my Darlow pants! Super comfortable and flattering fit for me. I would class myself as a 'confident beginner' - (familiar with pattern terminology and the basics). I was a little daunted as there seemed like a lot of steps for this pattern including welt pockets which I've never done, but the pants looked so great I decided I needed to make them!
Emily's instructions are clear, concise and well illustrated making it hard to go wrong. I even made the welt pockets (I thought about skipping that bit!)
I learned a so much making this pattern and now really do understand the difference between sewing a thoughtful and well drafted pattern/garment vs just an ok pattern.
I will definitely make more of Emily's patterns just for the fabulous learning opportunity!
