In the Folds is now offering a monthly subscription that brings together patterns, techniques and answers your specific questions, all in one place, within the In the Folds community.

Curated by ITF projects will help you learn more skills, instead of just making more clothes.

Sewing a handmade wardrobe you are proud of is about learning the skills and building on them over time. With these resources (and access to our online community group), you will build a resource and pattern library that you can refer to on your handmade journey, empowering you to sew a wardrobe that you love, one piece and one skill at a time. We are excited for you to join us.

Please be aware that at this stage, gifted memberships are a manual process (we're working on it), which means your friend or loved one will not receive the project instantly.

This Month's Project

We all love it when something we make fits us without any alterations. #winning right? But if we’re honest, it’s rarely the case. Every single body on earth is unique in many ways - size, shape, curved or straight… the list goes on. Being able to make a garment fit the nuances of your own body is a learned skill, and it’s one that we’re passionate about here at ITF. Because why should we put up with ill-fitting clothes if we don’t have to?

The Fit Kits we've released so far have encouraged so many sewists to up their fitting game and have given makers the support and confidence they needed to give fitting adjustments a go. So we’re very excited to share our latest Curated by ITF project with you - the Barkly skirt and Fit Kit!

This project will expand your understanding of the fitting and toiling process for a skirt and teach you some new techniques to add to your garment sewing tool belt. We will support you to make a toile of the Barkly skirt and give you a step-by-step process for doing a fitting, as well as how to fit yourself if you don’t have an extra pair of hands to help you! If you’re new to experimenting with garment fitting, this is the project for you! A skirt is a perfect way to dip your toes into the fitting pool without getting overwhelmed.

While the tutorials have been designed to work alongside the Barkly skirt, they can be used for a range of skirt patterns with a similar shape.

Garment Details

The Barkly skirt is a panelled A-line skirt with pockets and a range of interesting and fun to sew details. It has been designed to be worn all year round - in summer in soft linens with sandals and in winter in denim with tights and boots.

View A sits on the natural waist (the top of the waistband will sit just above the natural waist) and features a shaped waistband, slanted pockets that are inset in the side panels and a hem facing.

View B sits just below the natural waist (as it features a waist facing, rather than a waistband), has patch pockets (which are therefore optional), and side splits in the hem.

Both styles feature a centre back invisible zip for a clean finish.
Styles can be mixed and matched so that you can combine your style preferences. More information can be found in the STYLE VARIATION KIT.

This pattern is available in our new extended size range. More details about In the Folds sizing can be found here.

Suggested Fabrics

The Barkly skirt is compatible with mid-weight to heavy-weight fabrics such as: linen, cotton canvas, cotton drill, denim, corduroy or wool.

Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure and drape in the skirt.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions

  • Coordinating thread

  • 25cm (10in) invisible zip

  • 0.5m (0.5yds) light to mid-weight fusible interfacing

The pattern is available in both sizes A - J and sizes G - P. Our size charts can be found here.

Styles can be mixed and matched so that you can combine your style preferences.
More details related to fitting the Barkly skirt and making a toile can be found in the FIT KIT that is included with the pattern for this month’s issue of Curated by ITF.

Patterns are drafted for height of 170cm (5'7") and include a ‘lengthen / shorten line’ so you can make adjustments to suit your height.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Pattern includes seam allowances.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 2 on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for advanced beginners and beyond. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will have you feeling very proud of both the inside and outside of your garment.

By working through this pattern and Fit Kit, you will gain confidence in: sewing curved seams, sewing pockets, sewing and invisible zip, sewing a waistband or waist facing (depending on the variation you choose to make) and working with interfacing. You will also gain confidence in making a toile, making pattern alterations, fitting a garment on yourself and achieving a great fit.
