What’s included
An Introduction to Garment Repair
Created in collaboration with Renee Williams of Repair Redefined, An Introduction to Garment Repair will guide you through the foundations of mending. Work through a mending sampler or apply the techniques directly to your own garments as you learn hand stitches, patching, darning, and embroidery.
Denim Care + Repair Kit
Developed in collaboration with Alyx Jacobs Repair , this resource focuses on repairing and maintaining denim. Learn how to mend worn areas, repair hems, and replace zips so your denim can continue to be worn for years to come.
Supplies
You likely already have many of the tools needed to get started. There is no need to gather everything at once, build your kit over time based on the types of repairs you want to do.
A basic mending kit may include:
- Hand sewing needles in a range of sizes
- Sewing thread (universal thread, embroidery thread, sashiko thread or perle cotton)
- Strong polyester thread
- Topstitching thread (optional, for a classic denim finish)
- Fabric scraps for patching (denim, cotton or linen)
- Natural woven fabric for sampler practice
- Fusible interfacing to stabilise worn areas
- Scissors or snips
- Seam ripper
- Pins or clips
- Safety pins
- Marking tools (chalk, fabric pen or erasable marker)
- Ruler
- Sewing machine with straight stitch (used for preparation and some repairs)
- Denim or topstitch needles (90/14 or 100/16 for heavier fabrics)
- Zip foot (useful for fly front repairs)
- Jeans zips (for replacements)
Optional tools:
- Embroidery hoop
- Tweezers for thread removal
- Rivet kit and hammer
- Pressing cloth
