Are you ready to make clothes you will wear, love and cherish?
In the Folds offers a monthly subscription that brings together patterns, techniques and answers your specific questions, all in one place, within the In the Folds community.
Curated by ITF projects will help you learn more skills, instead of just making more clothes.
Sewing a handmade wardrobe you are proud of is about learning the skills and building on them over time. With these resources (and access to our online community group), you will build a resource and pattern library that you can refer to on your handmade journey, empowering you to sew a wardrobe that you love, one piece and one skill at a time. We are excited for you to join us.

This Month's Project
Wherever you are in the world, whatever the season, a hat is something you should always have within arm’s reach! And if that’s not already the case, the Fairbank hat will quickly become your new go-to accessory.
Garment Details
Fairbank is a versatile hat pattern with two brim options. Regular, for a classic bucket hat look. Wide, for extra coverage and style.
Views A & C are designed for warm weather fabrics and can be made reversible to get two looks in one. View B has been adapted to suit bulky fabrics like sherpa, making it perfect for cool weather when you want something to keep your ears warm.
Suitable for a range of fabrics and perfect for busting through your fabric stash, the Fairbank hat is the ideal project to finish off the year. Make a cosy Fairbank for winter and a wide-brimmed Fairbank for summer. And as an added bonus, the pattern comes in a range of sizes, so you can make one for every member of your family!
Suggested Fabrics
The Views A & C are compatible with cotton canvas, denim, cotton drill, other medium to heavy weight woven fabrics that hold their structure. Lighter weight fabrics can be used, but keep in mind this will impact the amount of structure in the finished hat. Avoid fabrics with open weaves. The lining fabric can match the exterior or be a different material to create a reversible hat. It will be visible. To minimise bulk, consider using a slightly lighter-weight lining. You might also opt for a silk lining to prevent hair damage and frizz while aiding in temperature regulation.
For View B, suitable fabrics include corduroy, sherpa, fleece, heavyweight wool, tweed, quilted fabric, velvet, and terry towelling. The lining for View B should be lightweight to avoid adding extra bulk. Lightweight cotton is a good choice as it won't be visible; it is used only to line the interior of the hat, not the brim. Please note that sewing with some of these fabrics can be difficult to work with, are only suitable for experienced sewists and may be difficult to sew on some sewing machines.
Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.
Notions
-
Coordinating thread
-
Light or medium-weight fusing. Type will depend on your fabric choice. Yardage and more information can be found here.
The Fairbank hat pattern includes 9 sizes and is suitable for children to adults.
We have included an estimated age/size indication with each size to help if you are making a hat for someone else. Please keep in mind that this is only a rough indication. Head sizes vary greatly and it is common to cut a size outside the estimated age/size.
We recommend selecting a size based on head circumference.
Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.
Pattern includes seam allowances.
Difficulty
The pattern is placed at a Level 1.5 on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, which means you have some basic projects under your belt and are ready for new challenges.
By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: sewing curved seams, working with interfacing, top-stitching and edge-stitching, bagging out and working with unusual fabrics. Please be aware that sewing with cool weather fabrics, like sherpa or heavyweight wool, can be difficult for inexperienced sewists, especially on lightweight sewing machines.
Digital product details
The pattern is suitable for printing on both A4 and US letter sized paper. A copy shop version is also included in the file (A1 or US 24" x 36"). Print at home pattern: 8 pages (a printing plan is included in the instructions so that you can choose to only print the pages you need for your preferred view).
Print shop version: 1 x A1 pages.
The pattern includes embedded layers. This means that you can select only the size/s you would like to print.
If you have any questions please see our FAQ and Digital Product Policy.
