Curated by In the Folds

Are you ready to make clothes you will wear, love and cherish?

In the Folds offers a monthly subscription that brings together patterns, techniques and answers your specific questions, all in one place, within the In the Folds community.

Curated by ITF projects will help you learn more skills, instead of just making more clothes.

Sewing a handmade wardrobe you are proud of is about learning the skills and building on them over time. With these resources (and access to our online community group), you will build a resource and pattern library that you can refer to on your handmade journey, empowering you to sew a wardrobe that you love, one piece and one skill at a time. We are excited for you to join us.

More information about Curated by In the Folds can be found here.

This Month's Project

The Ormond coat is a timeless outerwear piece, thoughtfully crafted to be a staple garment in your autumn-winter wardrobe. With an uncomplicated classic style, you can rely on Ormond to do the trans-seasonal heavy-lifting.

For complete versatility, we love it in denim and neutrals - so you can mindlessly throw it over your shoulder as you’re walking out the door, just in case the weather turns. Or make it a focal piece in an over-sized print or buffalo check. Either way, you’ll quickly wonder how on earth you survived without it.

Garment Details

The Ormond coat features a boxy silhouette, convertible collar and raglan sleeves. View A offers a calf-length coat with a centre back vent for ease of movement, French-seamed welt pockets and bias bound seams for a durable and elevated finish.

With its chore coat vibes, View B finishes at the high-hip and features distinctive asymmetrical patch pockets and hard-wearing flat-felled seams.

Suggested Fabrics

The Ormond coat is compatible with mid to heavy weight outerwear fabrics such as: cotton canvas, waxed canvas/oil cloth, cotton moleskin, rigid denim, corduroy and heavyweight cotton drill.

Wool coating and boiled wool can also be used, but please keep in mind that the coat is unlined. For some, this may be uncomfortable, or make it tricker to slide the coat on and off. Sleeves can be underlined with a smooth fabric to help with this.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions

  • Coordinating thread

    VIEW A

  • 22m (24yds) x 32mm (1 1/4in) single-fold bias tape (if using pre-made binding, this is 25mm (1in)).

  • 0.4m (0.5yd) pocketing fabric (lightweight cotton or lining fabric) for one set of pocket bags.

  • 1.3m (1.5yd) light or midweight fusible interfacing

  • 6 x 2-2.5cm (3/4-1in) buttons

    VIEW B

  • 0.9m (1yd) light or midweight fusible interfacing

  • 4 x 2-2.5cm (3/4-1in) buttons

The pattern is available in both sizes A - J and sizes G - P. Our size charts can be found here.

The Ormond coat is designed to be relaxed in fit so that it can be layered with your autumn-winter wardrobe. Select a size based on your high bust measurement and then check the finished garment measurements for your size before choosing to do a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA). The waist and hip also have considerable ease, so check the finished garment measurements before choosing to grade between sizes.

This pattern is drafted for a B cup bust and a height of 170cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN / SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length. The size A-J pattern has been drafted for a B cup bust, while the size G-P pattern has been drafted for a D cup bust.

Pattern includes seam allowances.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 3.5 on the In The Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for intermediate sewists and beyond. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will make you feel very proud of both the inside and outside of your garment.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in sewing: curved seams, pockets, seam finishes with bias binding, flat-felled seams, interfacing, top-stitching and more.

So Very Worth A Subscription!

Early on I got the feeling that In The Folds was a bit different. They were always generous with sharing their knowledge, quick to fully and helpfully answer questions all the while offering designs that I - as an older sewist - loved! Clean lines, great directions and patterns that appeal to ALL age groups. What’s not to love? !

A subscription to In The Folds is well worth the small cost and I love encouraging a group that is so welcoming and talented! We need more like them. I urge any sewist - from beginner to advanced- to consider at least trying a subscription. You will, no doubt learn something, support a special group, and have access to patterns that suit all shapes, sizes and ages! Perhaps like me, once you try a subscription you will wonder why you waited so long and will continue to look forward to each new edition!

Keep up the great work!

Marie, this review has MADE OUR DAY! Thanks you SO MUCH.

Learning Heaps!!

I am a self taught sewer so finding this resource has been wonderful. I am finally learning to do things properly. So far I have only made the Kealy Tee Shirt but I was very happy with how it turned out. A little glitch here and there but it's all a learning experience. The community is very supportive and I love seeing what others have made.

We are so happy to hear you're finding our resources helpful, Jenni! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.

I love Curated by In the Folds!

What a warm and welcoming community to be part of. The patterns are interesting, the skills building is first rate. Mighty Networks works really well, and is a great place to share what we are learning together. To top it all off, this sewing club is in my own part of the world, so the patterns work for the current season! I love everything about this Curated experience, and recommend it to anyone wishing to grow their sewing skills and their love of sewing.

What a ripper of a review, Sue - thank you so much! We've loved having you in the community and seeing what you're making.

more than I ever imagined

I am so happy to have discovered ITF and joined the subscription. It is so much more than patterns and making clothes; I have learned some valuable industrial techniques, different approaches to sewing the same things and getting inspirations from the ever supportive ITF team and community. Most important, ITF has always encouraged me to take my time and sew at my own pace.

Thanks so much for this review!

Absolutely 5 star subscription!

I have been a subscriber for the past year and purchased the previous subscriptions from the beginning.
I am in awe of the sheer amount of hard work that must go into putting together the wonderfully detailed notes and patterns. I absolutely love the format you use to present your notes. Please don't ever change it! The level of detail is extensive but just right. So beautifully set out.
I really look forward to each month's offering and have never been disappointed. I love your detailed but bite sized approach to learning skills. Honestly, I have learned so much. I'm always so amazed at how much we receive as subscribers for the amount we pay. The most worthwhile subscription ever!

Thank you so much for this review, Kathleen. I have passed it on to our team - it really makes our day to hear that what we are doing makes a difference and is appreciated. Happy sewing!
