Flat-felled seams, top-stitching and a large hem allowance create a drool-worthy finish, while the cropped, straight leg and elasticated waist make for a comfy pair of pants that you’re not going to want to take off.

Dive into your stash and make a pair for every day of the week. Have some fun with horizontal and vertical stripes and a dash of pattern clash. We dare you to see where your imagination takes you!

Please note: This listing is for a digital pattern only.

Suggested Fabrics

The Attwood pants are compatible with mid-weight woven fabrics such as: linen, linen blends, cotton canvas, cotton drill and denim. The pattern lends itself well to colour blocking. Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure and drape in the finished garment.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions

  • Coordinating thread

  • 5cm (2in) wide elastic (your waist measurement + 5cm (2in))

  • Optional: If your fabric is prone to stretching, you may choose to use interfacing tape to stabilise the front opening. Alternatively, tearaway vilene can be used.

The pattern is available in sizes A - J and G - P. Our size charts can be found here.

The Attwood pants are designed to be relaxed in fit. Select a size based on your hip measurement and then adjust the elastic length to accommodate your waist.

Due to the nature of elastic waist pants, there is considerable ease in the waist of the pants before inserting elastic, so keep this in mind when selecting your size. We have provided the waist measurements without elastic so you can ensure the pants will fit over your hips.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 170cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN / SHORTEN
lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Pattern includes seam allowances.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 1.5 on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, which means you have some basic projects under your belt and are ready for new challenges. Through a combination of careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will leave you feeling very proud of your garment.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: pants construction, sewing flat felled seams on straight panels and curves, patch pockets, elasticated waistbands, top-stitching and hemming.

Atwood Pants

I love my Atwood pants! They are comfortable and the directions are well-written. The only thing that kept me from giving the pattern 5 stars is the construction order. I like to attach patch pockets when the garment is flat, so that is what I did. To me the flat felled seam is a visible design detail, so it made sense to use it on the side seam, where it would be seen, rather than on the almost hidden inseam. That also allowed me to attach the pocket easily while the pants were flat. I used the written instructions for the side seam on the inseam, which I serged. It’s a keeper.

Hi there! Thanks so much for your review, and we appreciate your input.

With regards to your comment about the flat-felled seams... This type of seam finish is actually more about functionality than looks (although we agree, we love a flat-felled seam finish!). Flat felled seams are used in areas of high wear on pants and jackets. As many people's legs rub together, a flat felled seam is a good finish in that area.

We're sure other makers will find your comments helpful if they too prefer attaching patch pockets flat, as this is an alternative order of construction that also works well for this pattern.
