Hove jacket

Regular price $22.00

Garment details

The Hove jacket is a loose-fitting hooded jacket designed for woven fabrics, with a sportswear vibe. With two different styles, it is the perfect layering piece.

It features a fully lined hood, open-ended zip closure (or double-ended zip if you'd prefer), high-low hem, in-seam pockets and pleated back detail.

All seams are finished with bias binding or Hong Kong binding, for a beautiful and high-end finish.

View A has a dropped shoulder and sleeve with a hem facing. The sleeves on View A are designed to be worn either straight or folded back, for a more casual look.

View B is sleeveless (creating the look of a dolman sleeve) and is designed to be layered over long-sleeved tops and dresses. The armhole on View A is finished with a facing for a beautiful and clean finish - in line with the rest of the jacket.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 3 on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for intermediate makers. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will have you feeling very proud of both the inside and outside of your new handmade jacket.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: sewing curved seams, sewing pockets, setting in sleeves, sewing a zip and bias bound seams.

Please note: at this stage, the Hove jacket pattern is only available in PDF format.

      I can recommend.

It's rare that a jacket pattern is so ok that you don't need a month to recover after making it. This pattern was not really an exception, but that was due to my fabric choice rather than the pattern. It is a hugely oversized jacket with relatively short sleeves and a funny shaped facing, offering you a great finish even if you are relatively new to sewing. The major caveat is that this pattern is drafted for a 5'7" human and really benefits from adjustment to suit your height (because it's so oversized). This adjustment will affect the way the pockets sit in the front curve and it hasn't really been accounted for in the instructions. As long as you are cautious to match your pocket curve to the front curve after adjusting, the pieces line up like a charm and in an appropriate fabric (think DRAPE!) it could easily be sewn up in a day. I made mine in a cardboard-like reflective nylon and the result is a surprisingly pleasing waterproof and shiny tent, under which I can layer lots, but the drape is definitely missing.

      Beautiful jacket

Quite beautiful jacket, the inside is stunning. I should have used contrasting tread also on the outside. I used light denim and it doesn't hold the shape as much as in the picture. The jacket is also a bit longer than i wished (i am 166 and used the size D). I am no expert and the pattern is very easy to follow! Notice that it requires some hand sewing.

Thanks so much for this wonderful review, Sara!

      Beautiful jacket

I finished making the jacket a couple of weeks ago and am wearing it all the time. I shopped for a long time to find a unique jacket that is versatile and stylish. I made this jacket in a light soft ripstop-ish fabric to use it as a raincoat or wind breaker. The instructions were very easy to follow. I'm a pretty experienced sewer but I think sewers with less experience could compete this as well. With the dropped shoulder design, fitting is also much more forgiving. I did not make a fitting sample, I just proceeded ahead with my chosen fabric. The jacket fits great with no modifications. I used 2-colors and I fold up the sleeves for contrast. All the pieces came together easily. You need tons of bias tape! I made my own in a cute print and it looks great. I've never done this binding technique and it came together easily with the pattern instructions.

We're so glad you lovely our Hove jacket pattern! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. This helps us so much.

Very satisfying make and a functional coat

I just finished making my Hove jacket. I spent a couple of years looking for the right pattern and fabric. Now I have a nice-looking, casual mid-length light to medium weight water and wind-resistant coat in my favorite color that's perfect for me in the Pacific NW. The main fabric is a softshell fleece. It was a remnant, so I didn't have enough for the inside. This worked out well since I think it would have made the coat unnecessarily heavy and bulky. I also didn't have quite enough to do the lower back panel. So for that panel and the inside, I used a water/wind-resistant shell that didn't have the fleece backing. For the lower back panel, I sewed a piece of fleece to it as interlining so the weight would match the rest of the outside of the coat. I cut my bias tape from a tablecloth from a secondhand store. I topstitched next to all of the seams since the softshell laughs at the iron and the single shell wilts. It turned out lovely. The fabric may have a little more body than intended for the pattern, so I could have gone down a size. The directions were excellent. I love binding the edges before sewing the seams. The instructions pointed out when to bind the edges so I didn't add extra bulk by binding where it wasn't needed and didn't miss binding where it was. Completing the project was very satisfying - no hemming! Yay! Now I need to find someone who needs a coat so I can enjoy making this again. I plan to enjoy my new coat for a very long time.
