Sawtell Dress + Fit Kit

The Sawtell dress is a sophisticated wardrobe staple with a range of interesting details. In a lightweight fabric it is the perfect summer cover-up. In a heavier fabric, the Sawtell dress can be styled with a turtle-neck underneath and tights to take you through autumn and winter.

Garment Details

The Sawtell dress features an inset placket with pleats and bust darts. It has a yoke and box pleat in the back, capped sleeves and a wide hem. The neckline is finished with bias binding. Pockets are inset to create an interesting design feature and a new technique for you to learn.

This pattern will teach you some fantastic sewing skills, such as: sewing pleats, attaching a yoke, sewing inset pockets and an inset placket, sewing bias binding and sewing capped sleeves.

We’ve created a jam-packed Fit Kit to accompany the pattern which covers a broad range of pattern alterations for common fit issues. The boxy design of the Sawtell dress will give you an opportunity to gain the skills required to achieve a great fit through the shoulders and neckline, without leaving you overwhelmed with too many fitting challenges. Although we’ve designed the Fit Kit to work alongside the Sawtell dress, you will be able to refer to it long into the future when you are working on other projects.

Please note: This product can only be purchased by Current Curated by ITF subscribers. If you would like to sign-up you can do so here.

Suggested Fabrics

The Sawtell dress is compatible with light to medium weight fabrics such as: linen, linen blends, cotton, wool suiting and lightweight denim. If you would like to use something lightweight, such as viscose / rayon or silk.

Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure in the finished garment. Softer fabrics will give the garment drape and movement, while stiffer fabrics will create a more voluminous and structured silhouette.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here

Notions

  • Coordinating thread

  • 1m (1yd) x 32mm (1¼ in) single fold bias tape

  • 0.5m (0.5yd) lightweight fusible interfacing

  • Optional: 1.3m (1yd) x 32mm (1¼ in) single fold bias tape for finishing inside placket edge

The pattern is available in both sizes A - J (drafted for a B sewing cup size) and sizes G - P (drafted for a D sewing cup size). Our size charts can be found here.

The Sawtell dress is designed to be loose and boxy in shape. Soft shaping is created at the bust through subtle shaping at the top of the side seam and bust darts.

The Sawtell dress is designed to have considerable design ease at the waist and hips, so keep this in mind when selecting a size. Your hip measurement might be in a larger size bracket than your waist - before grading between sizes, check the finished garment measurements to see if there will be enough ease in the hips.

Patterns are drafted for height of 170cm (5'7") and include a ‘lengthen / shorten line’ so you can make adjustments to suit your height.

More details related to fitting the Sawtell dress and making a toile can be found in the FIT KIT that is included with the pattern for this issue of Curated by ITF.
