Curated by ITF - Issue 15
Pants Design Kit
Culottes, tapered leg, high waist, low waist, pants with pockets, pants without pockets, zip fly, lapped zipper, elastic waist, jeans, pants with added flare, pants with pleats … the options are endless with our Pants Design Kit!
The third Issue in our 3 month series on Pants Sewing (check out Part 1 and Part 2), we’ll help you sew your dream pants that include all your favourite pants elements! Because what’s the point of developing your pants sewing skills and having a perfectly fitted pants block if you can’t design a pair of pants you actually want to wear?
Pants Design Kit
The Pants Design Kit will take you through the process of designing your ideal pair of pants. Adjust your pants block from Part 2 to include as many (or as few!) customisations as you desire.
Pleats, pockets, leg volume, waist height - the details are all up to you. Just select the pants features you want to add to your block and follow the tutorials in our Pants Design Kit.
We have also included a Skills Library that will support you to sew up your new designs!
Skills you will learn:
- How to use a pattern block
- The process for taking a pattern block to pattern
- Loads of patternmaking techniques that you will be able to apply to all your patternmaking (and pattern hacking) projects in the future
- How to taper leg width
- Add panel lines
- Add volume - in a number of different ways
- Altering waistline height to suit your preferences
- Converting a pants pattern to a jeans pattern
- Pockets, pleats, waistband options and altering opening position.
Please note: Although most of the designs from the Pants Design Kit could be applied to a number of pants blocks, the tutorials are based on the Pants Fitting pattern from Issue 14 of Curated by ITF.
After subscribing, we suggest purchasing Issue 13 (Part 1) and Issue 14 (Part 2) to support the skills you will be learning through this issue of Curated.
You will be able to purchase past Issues once you have created your In the Folds account. This process is outlined in the Welcome email you will receive after subscribing. The cost of each past Issue will be the same as, but in addition to, your monthly subscription fee.
Skills library
One of the challenges of making your own patterns is that you no longer have instructions for how to make the garment. We've solved this problem by including a range of resources to help you work out the best order of construction, fabric yardage, and included a deep dive into some specific sewing techniques that you may need for sewing your new pants.
Mighty Networks group
By purchasing this issue you will gain access to the extra resources we shared in our online community group when we released the project. This means that you will be able to ask questions, share your makes and connect with other makers who are also on a mission to learn new skills and sew clothing in a slow and conscious way.
Difficulty
We have created a range of different tutorials for the Pants Design Kit, so that no matter what your patternmaking experience is, there will be something for you.
If you’re new to patternmaking, we suggest warming up by altering the length, tapering the leg or adding volume.
Once you’ve given them a go, try some of our more complex hacks, such as adding pleats or slash pockets.
For those of you who are ready to step things up, try lowering the waist or converting your pants pattern into jeans.
