Elwood dress

The latest addition to our signature pattern collection, the Elwood dress is all about sophisticated comfort and effortless dressing. The perfect floaty house dress for a warm summer’s day or a beautifully refined dress for an evening soiree, Elwood will fill a wardrobe gap you didn’t know you had.

Garment Details

Featuring a v-neck with sweeping panel lines the Elwood dress has a captivating silhouette that is a gentle nod to all the features you love about our Collins top design, including its pieced, puzzle-like construction.

With two pattern views (one featuring a stylish lantern sleeve and the other sleeveless) this design is both pretty and practical. It has a calf-length hem, in-seam pockets, with bias binding and French seams for a beautiful and professional finish.

Suggested Fabrics

The Elwood dress is compatible with mid-weight woven fabrics such as: linen, linen blends, cotton poplin and chambray. Lightweight fabrics are also suitable, but will create a softer and more relaxed silhouette. For a softer silhouette, consider sateen, silk (crepe de chine or habotai), double gauze or viscose (rayon). Be careful if you are a beginner though, as these fabrics are a little trickier to sew.

Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure and drape in the Elwood dress.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Notions

  • Coordinating thread
  • Up to 2.7m (3 yd), depending on size and view, pre-made or home-made bias binding
  • Interfacing

The pattern is available in both sizes A - J and sizes G - P. Our size charts can be found here.

The Elwood dress is designed to be relaxed in fit.

Select a size based on your high bust measurement and then check the finished garment measurements for your size before choosing to do a Full Bust Adjustment (FBA). The waist and hip also have considerable ease, so check the finished garment measurements before choosing to grade between sizes.

This pattern is drafted for a B cup bust and a height of 170cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN / SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 2.5 on the In the Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for intermediate sewists and beyond. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will have you feeling very proud of both the inside and outside of your garment.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: sewing French seams, bias binding, V-necks, piecing panels together accurately, sewing a raglan lantern sleeve and in-seam pockets with French seam finish.
