Mornington skirt

The Mornington skirt is a fresh take on the lantern silhouette; architectural yet wearable, with an intriguing play of panel lines and volume.

Garment Details

This asymmetrical design is constructed from a series of thoughtfully shaped panels. From waist to hip, the fit is clean and gently contoured thanks to the panel seams. The lower section builds out into a fuller shape that drapes beautifully around the body. A shaped waistband hugs the waist comfortably, while a lapped side zip with a shield and button closure keeps the finish neat. The centre back split adds ease of movement, and the hemfacing completes the skirt.

View A includes pockets integrated into the side seams for everyday wearability, while View B features elegant topstitching along the seam lines to highlight the unique panel construction.

Don’t be fooled by the unusual pattern pieces—what might look a little whacky on paper comes together with clever drafting to create a modern skirt with a soft, sculptural silhouette. It’s a design that feels contemporary and artful

Suggested Fabrics

The Mornington skirt works best in midweight woven fabrics that hold the shape of the silhouette without feeling stiff. Consider using: linen, linen blends, cotton drill or twill, denim, or wool. For a softer, more fluid look, try midweight silk, tencel twill, or similar fabrics with gentle drape.

View B, with its feature topstitching, is especially well-suited to denim or cotton drill as these fabrics showcase seam details and create a structured, “modern finish”.

Keep in mind that the weight of the fabric will determine the amount of structure and drape in the Mornington skirt.

Fabric requirements and finished garment measurements can be found here.

Sizing and fabric requirements for the Mornington skirt can be found here.

The pattern is available in both sizes A - J and sizes G - P. Our size charts can be found here.

The Mornington skirt is designed to be gently fitted through the waist and hip, with more volume through the lower panels. Select your size based on your hip measurement. If your waist and hip fall into different size brackets, grade between sizes through the waist panels to achieve the best fit. The HIP LINE is marked on the pattern to help you with this.

This pattern is drafted for a height of 170cm (5'7"). Use the LENGTHEN / SHORTEN lines on the pattern to make alterations to the length. Two lines have been included so you can distribute length adjustments evenly through the skirt without altering the proportions of the design.

Pattern includes seam allowances.

Difficulty

The pattern is placed at a Level 3 on the In The Folds pattern skill scale, and has been designed for intermediate sewists and beyond who are confident using sewing patterns and know a couple of basic pattern alterations to achieve a better fit. Through careful drafting and beautiful finishing techniques, this pattern will have you feeling very proud of both the inside and outside of your garment.

By working through this pattern, you will gain confidence in: sewing curved seams, constructing a shaped waistband and installing a lapped side zip with a shield and button closure. You will also develop skills in working with hem facings, sewing pockets into panel seams (View A) and adding topstitching (View B).
