Sewing a handmade wardrobe you are proud of is about learning the skills and building on them over time. With these resources (and access to our online community group), you will build a resource and pattern library that you can refer to on your handmade journey, empowering you to sew a wardrobe that you love, one piece and one skill at a time. We are excited for you to join us.

Skill Sharer

You love what we do at In the Folds and you would like to share it with another maker.

The Skill Sharer tier enables you to pay for your own subscription to the Skill Builder tier and gift one to another maker who cannot afford the subscription at the moment.

If you’d like to sign-up to receive a gifted membership from someone in our community find more details here.

You and another member of our community will gain access to:

  • New monthly projects: You will receive your first project when you sign up and then on the first of every month, you’ll receive a new project straight to your inbox. This will teach you new skills and build on what we’ve been learning each month.

This tier allows another maker access to the subscription (which we will organise). It is not gifting to a friend. If you would prefer to gift a membership to a friend or family member, select this membership tier and provide us with their name and email address in the notes at checkout. Please be aware that at this stage, gifted memberships are a manual process (we're working on it), which means your friend or loved one will not receive the project instantly.

Please note: you will be charged your first month's subscription fee when you sign-up and receive the current project directly to your inbox. After that, you will be charged on the first of each month and receive your new project on the first of each month.

This Month's Project

You’ve added foundational patternmaking skills to your sewing toolkit with our Copy Your Clothes Skills Kit.

So, where to now?

Well, learning how to draft patterns from ready-to-wear garments is only half the fun!

Part two of our Copy Your Clothes Series is all about making them your own.

This month’s project, the Make It Your Own Skills Kit, will help you turn your patterns and wardrobe ideas into truly unique-to-you garments.

Through a number of prompts we’ll help you consider the different areas of each garment to determine if fit adjustments are needed or style alterations desired. Then we’ll show you how to apply a range of professional patternmaking techniques and skills to achieve the exact look you’re after. Use the resource to personalise patterns you’ve drafted from a ready-to-wear garment, or a pattern from your stash!

Skills you will learn

  • Altering garment fit through grading and darts
  • Dart manipulation
  • Panel lines - horizontal, princess, curved and variations
  • Changing a garment's shape - length, fit, removing sleeves, adjusting armholes, waist height
  • Adding volume
  • Drafting facings

As always, these tutorials have been created so you can use them over and over and adapt them to any project you like.

The adjustments are supported by a range of tutorials that cover everything you need to know about tracing patterns, marking notches, adding seam allowances, and checking and truing patterns and darts.

Mighty Networks group

Once again, we will be working on everything together in our Mighty Networks group. This means that you will be able to ask questions, share your makes and connect with other makers who are also on a mission to learn new skills and sew clothing in a slow and conscious way.

Difficulty

We've created a range of different fitting tutorials and hacks that you can apply to patterns you’ve drafted from ready-to-wear garments, or any pattern in your stash. They have been designed so that no matter what your patternmaking experience is, there will be something for you.

We recommend starting small and building on your skills one adjustment or hack at a time. This approach will stop you getting overwhelmed or confused. As you take time to fully understand and correctly apply the techniques and skills you’re learning, you can be confident that you will love the process and finished garments all the more!

Love this group and more!

The patterns, instructions and monthly interactions with the In The Folds hosts are great and has really helped to improve my skills. The online group is pure joy. Everyone is positive, shares very useful information and other resources beyond In The Fold. I take part every month even I am not working on a project because I love the group. I love the style of ITF clothing and as a beginner, being part of this group has built my wardrobe, sewing tools/skills and pattern library. I love having fabrics I pick and clothes that fit me.

Wow, Kathy! Thank you so much. We're so happy we can help you on your sewing journey!

So much more than a pattern-a-month subscription

The team at ITF are all about skill building so you can apply those skills to any pattern you like in future - beautiful construction techniques, fitting to the wearers body, adjusting or "hacking" a pattern to make it your own. Often the monthly projects are designed in a series - such as, learn options and skills to make a collared shirt, then make a collared shirt, then hack it to make it your own as a dress etc. The Foldies online community is also very supportive and well organised using Mighty Networks. I love it!

Thank you so much for this, Jo! Glad you love our learning approach.

So Very Worth A Subscription!

Early on I got the feeling that In The Folds was a bit different. They were always generous with sharing their knowledge, quick to fully and helpfully answer questions all the while offering designs that I - as an older sewist - loved! Clean lines, great directions and patterns that appeal to ALL age groups. What’s not to love? !

A subscription to In The Folds is well worth the small cost and I love encouraging a group that is so welcoming and talented! We need more like them. I urge any sewist - from beginner to advanced- to consider at least trying a subscription. You will, no doubt learn something, support a special group, and have access to patterns that suit all shapes, sizes and ages! Perhaps like me, once you try a subscription you will wonder why you waited so long and will continue to look forward to each new edition!

Keep up the great work!

Marie, this review has MADE OUR DAY! Thanks you SO MUCH.

Learning Heaps!!

I am a self taught sewer so finding this resource has been wonderful. I am finally learning to do things properly. So far I have only made the Kealy Tee Shirt but I was very happy with how it turned out. A little glitch here and there but it's all a learning experience. The community is very supportive and I love seeing what others have made.

We are so happy to hear you're finding our resources helpful, Jenni! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
